Clayton Tunnel is a 1,057 yard brick-lined tunnel with stone portals built in 1874 & opened as part of the Great Northern Railway’s “Alpine” triangular route between Bradford and Queensbury-Halifax-Keighley. Final closure of the line came in the 1963. Reputedly haunted as it was the scene of an accident during construction were 2 workers were dropped to their death down a shaft- Both casualties are buried in the graveyard of Clayton Parish Church where a headstone commemorates the accident.

The Eastern end is now buried under a housing estate in the Village of Clayton- a bungalow sits directly on top of were the portal once was!
