Mysterious Pyramid Barrows in Cambridgeshire England

These barrows at the village of Bartlow in Cambridgeshire are the largest surviving Roman burial mounds in Western Europe!

Between 1815 and 1840 they were excavated and a rich collection of grave goods, all dated to the late 1st and 2nd century AD, was found. The dead were cremated and placed into large wooden chests or brick chambers, which appear to have been lit by iron lamps. The mounds were built up from layers of soil and chalk with the largest reaching a height of 15m.
