Crumlin Road Gaol is a former prison situated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The jail itself was designed by Sir Charles Lanyon, and was built between 1843 and 1845, it is the only Victorian era prison remaining in Northern Ireland and was one of the most advanced prisons of its day.

On March 31, 1996 the Crumlin Road jail offically closed. The closure ended a 150-year history of imprisonment, Belfast conflict, and executions.

Built within a five-sided walled site, the gaol had four wings fanning from a central area known as The Circle. The Grade A listed building is part of the social fabric of the city and the first inmates, who were forced to walk from Carrickfergus Prison in chains, arrived in 1846.

People always love things that are mysterious and since visiting this jail is all considered a different experience, one of the things that make it even a lot more exciting is the tunnel that links the courthouse on the other side of the Crumlin road to the hanging cell, Governor’s office, hospital and graveyard.

The tour inside the Crumlin Road Gaol will take about 70 minutes along with a tour guide who will be telling the story of the place and which will give the visitors the chance to experience how the life of the prisoners used to feel and look like when they were referred to as the prisoners of “the Crum”.

There are several things to experience when you visit the Crumlin Road Gaol in Belfast, Northern Ireland, which in addition to the secret tunnel, there is also the C-Wing, the Man’s Cell where 17 men spent their last days before being executed, and you will also get the chance and permission to visit the gravesite where the remains of 15 of the executed men still remain today – this might seem a little bit scary!

The Crumlin Road Gaol is open seven days of the whole year except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day. The ticket fee for entering the Crumlin prison differ according to the age; adults will pay 9 pounds, children from 5 to 15 years old will pay 6.50 pounds and those under 5 years old will be allowed access for free, and there are those who could bring ticket for the whole family for 25 pounds.

Visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol as some kind of completing the touristic attractions in Belfast city is not the only thing you would be doing in this location, but you could also have your lunch or dinner at the restaurant found there, the Cuffs Bard and Grill ( which we believe could serve the best burger in town (
