Grangegorman – Abandoned Lunatic Asylum, Dublin, Ireland.

An extensive tour of ‘The Richmond (District) Lunatic Asylum’ in Grangegorman, Dublin, Ireland. This early 19th century building was Ireland’s first specifically-built lunatic asylum. It based on the plan of Bethlehem Hospital (aka Bedlam) in London. The area behind the building was previously occupied by numerous wings and facilities; these were demolished in the 1990s. The building is now ruinous and someone built a primary school directly in front of the facade. 2015 update: this building is undergoing stabilisation works as part of the DIT Grangegorman Campus project.
