Day 11: Kindness Rocks by Fullarton Parish Church

A Church of Scotland minister and a Catholic priest from Irvine are working with people from their community to tell the Christmas story in a short film and to promote kindness and caring in our daily lives.

Rev Neil Urquhart, minister at Fullarton Parish Church and Father Willie Boyd of St Mary’s and St John Ogilvie Parish Churches, who are also known as ‘The Shoes Brothers”, are firm friends and have worked together for the last nine years making humorous and uplifting videos to spread their message of community spirit and Christian values.

Their latest project ‘Kindness Rocks’ will see the pair join forces with the North Ayrshire Kindness Innovation Network and FullOn Art to record their unique song specially written for the festive season and produce a short film that tells the Nativity story with a cast of characters drawn from their local community.

“We brainstormed with young people and came up with a plan to promote kindness and to celebrate all the good things in our community,” Rev Neil says.

“When we are caring and sharing we are at our best and when we show kindness to one another we create a better and brighter world.”

The film, which premiered at Fullarton Connexions on 10 December, shows how welcoming strangers and showing kindness to people who are down on their luck is at the heart of the Christmas story.

A group of bikers will play the parts of the shepherds and Big Issue sellers will portray the Wise Men.

A local couple and their baby represent the Holy Family and there are a few other surprises that bring the story of Jesus’ birth right up to the present day.

Since making the film, the featured act of kindness by the group of bikers has gone viral – with newspapers such as The Scottish Sun, the Metro and the Daily Mail sharing the video which a local woman took whilst the team were filming.

North Ayrshire Council and the Carnegie Trust are supporting North Ayrshire Kindness Innovation Network, this year.

The initiative encourages people to recognise and appreciate the good in their communities and to commit acts of kindness themselves.

The idea is to promote kindness all year round in the workplace, in schools neighbourhoods and across all of our communities in our daily lives.

God’s gift to us, the Greatest Gift, is the theme of the Church of Scotland’s 2018 Advent calendar. We invite you to sign up for a daily email or check our online Advent calendar for some daily inspiration.

Throughout the season, we’ll bring you stories that highlight how church members around the country are celebrating the birth of Jesus and sharing their faith, hope and love with everyone in their communities.
