Runologist Henrik Williams Examines the Newport Tower

Henrik Williams, Professor of Scandinavian Languages and an expert in Runic inscriptions from Uppsala University, Sweden, visited the Newport Tower on April 12, 2015 to examine marks on several of the stones in the Tower that have been purported to be possible Runic inscriptions. After a thorough examination Professor Williams concluded that the marks were possibly man-made, but certainly not Runic. He declined to give his own thoughts about the history of the Tower, but did reveal that he has never seen a Viking structure that resembles the Newport Tower, saying, “They did not make stone buildings at all like this.” Professor William’s contribution to the study of the Newport Tower will help put to rest one of the oldest, but least likely theories about the origin of this enigmatic structure. Present were Henrik Williams of Uppsala University, Professor William’s associate from Uppsala University, Jim Egan of the Newport Tower Museum, Steve DiMarzo of the New England Antiquities Research Association, and documentarian Marc Creedon.
