Hintergrund (deutsch) siehe Wikipedia:

The “Historic Car Graveyard Gürbetal” (Kaufdorf, Switzerland) was a collection of around 1’000 cars and around 400 motorbikes mainly from the 1930’s to the 1970’s. This historic car graveyard achieved international publicity because of several press releases.

As the place wasn’t open to the public for several decades, a lot of the vehicles weren’t exposed to nothing than the natural decomposition (not like on other places like Kyrkö Mosse in Sweden or in a wood near Châtillon in Belgium, where the cars were exposed to plundering and vandalism). Therefore the place achieved a mystical touch and a special symbiosis between nature and technics.

After several years of fighting against the local government and public authorities, the graveyard from “Messerli Autoverwertung limited company” was closed in 2010 despite the help of an official aid association ( and many other oldtimer-enthusiasts.

Also the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne and the Historical Museum of Berne attested the cultural-historical value of this place.

Even a serious project for an open-air museum didn’t have a chance due to environmental specifications, which became more rigorous during the years, and because of an allegedly not secure financing. Some say that the decision was also part of a revenge by the local government because of around 100 judicial conflicts over several decades with Family Messerli.

In 2009 around two-thirds of the vehicles were auctioned for values between 50.– and 17’000.–Swiss Francs.

In future the place should become a campground for Vagrancy People.
